This morning my boy @spennyreagon started a marathon at 3:45am. He was looking to get his PR. The last 10k of the marathon course I designed was predominately uphill. Everybody that ran this particular course slowed their pace by several minutes over the last segment. This is where the 40% Rule comes into effect. With the last 10k to go, uphill, I pushed Spencer way outside his comfort zone. He was able to run a minute faster per mile for that last 10k. There were some stretches where he was running a 5:50 minute mile pace. The most impressive thing about it was before we even got to the hardest section of the course, he was falling off my pace at around mile 19. We were running 6:55 minute miles at that point so what I decided to do was speak savage to the man to help him bring out his best. In speaking to him, he started to unlock more and more potential and the faster he ran. I haven’t seen the 40% Rule go down like this in quite some time but when he dropped that 5:50 at mile 25, I was remind of just how real the 40% Rule is. There is great beauty in seeing someone turn themself inside out to achieve a goal. We all have it in us but it requires us to reach a pain level that most of us don’t want or aren’t willing to reach. It’s on the other side of that pain where you finally see your true potential. By Spencer being able to keep his mind in the fight when things sucked, it allowed him to find more and his PR. Stay hard!
