From ON REPENTANCE & REPAIR. We can never do the work of repair and transformation while still perpetrating harm—in this case, taking responsibility for land theft and genocide while Native peoples are still exiled from their lands. *Even* outside the question of private land holdings—and what’s possible in bequests, say, or crowdfunded or nonprofit-enabled acquisitions (all of which have happened already here and there)—there are billions of acres of federal & state agency lands, tax-forfeited lands, etc. that can be, and in some places have already been, returned to their original owners. Doing this on the scale demanded by true national repentance work—together with owning harm, changing systems, and more—has the potential to bring our country to a whole new place. Most especially for some of the people most harmed by it. #LandBack.
