@genderconfnyc graciously invited me to tell a room of medical, legal, educational, spiritual professionals, and parents how to support trans youth. I told them to do their fucking jobs. I resent the idea that trans people require some sort of unique and special upbringing or treatment on the basis of our transness alone. I understand this as dehumanizing; it perpetuates the idea that we are not of this world. When cis people gather around year after year to hear the same directives around supporting our lives it is not concern, it’s entertainment. Would you believe me if I told you that do not need me to tell you that the child you created needs food, shelter, care, trust, commitment, honesty and love? You do not need me to tell you as a medical professional that your education doesn’t stop at trans bodies and your patients are there to learn from you and heal. Imagine hiring a repairman and upon arrival they ask YOU how to fix the radiator! It would be futile. Trans people are expected to be teachers before we are allowed to be human and gracious while you disrespect, kill, and erase us.
