“Why don’t you *just* try IVF?” Do I believe that this question is intended to be insensitive or rude? I don’t believe it’s ever intentional. I always give others grace in believing that they are genuinely curious & maybe just don’t have a lot of awareness when it comes to this topic. But hear me out... I don’t think there is anything *just* about IVF. To me... *Just* try IVF implies that IVF is the easy way out, the ‘simple fix.’ *Just* try IVF implies that it’s a guarantee to your baby. *Just* try IVF implies that it’s really no big deal. When others say a comment like this, here is what I believe...they don’t even KNOW what they are asking of someone when they say, *just* try IVF. The emotional, physical & financial toll IVF can create for a couple is ANYTHING BUT *just.* To me, it’s the farthest thing from the ‘easy way out’ and is a HUGE & difficult decision that is never, ever made lightly. I personally feel like this comment is very dismissive and underestimates the strength of those who choose to take this route because if you know anyone in the IVF community, you 100% know a warrior—there is nothing easy about it. So in the most gracious way possible, I ask you to please stop asking people in the infertility community to *just* try IVF. Believe me, we ALL know our options, we have ALL carefully weighed & considered each, and ALL have our reasons for why we choose what we choose. We have to remember that IVF doesn’t always = baby. And that IVF never = easy. If you are a part of the IVF community I just want to say that I SEE YOU. I see you walking through a grueling process that most don’t understand & clearly underestimate. You are so very brave and I am praying for your continued strength & fortitude. For those who have chosen a different route than IVF yet continued to get questioned on why don’t you *just* try it, I SEE YOU TOO. Keep fighting the good fight, sister.
