An infected bolt of cloth spreads plague throughout a remote village in Geraldine Brooks’ debut novel, YEAR OF WONDERS.
🦠🥀
#YearOfWonders is a book about things that fester. Illness, yes, but also lust, paranoia, curiosity, and agnosticism. It is 300 beautiful, brutal, anxiety-filled pages of a community slowly losing their faith in god and dying. All of which is captured by the narration of Anna Frith, a woman who in the wake of her own loss becomes historian and healer for those around her.

I’m so enamored by this dire, little book. Brooks’ writing is tactile and poetic—that in addition to thoughtful metaphors and vivid images, her consonants and vowels feel meticulously selected to create texture. I loved watching Anna track the course from passive to active, fighting off the desolation and malaise threatening to suffocate her. She is a character not quickly forgotten. This novel rocketed to the to top of my favorites I’ve read this year.
