Catholics gathered to pay their respects to Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza today at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown. Fiorenza died Sept. 19 at 91. Fiorenza served as bishop of the Dicoese of Galveston-Houston from 1985-2006. He became an archbishop in 2004 when Pope St. John Paul II elevated the diocese to an archdiocese. Speakers talked about Fiorenza's work fighting for civil rights and how he was known locally as one of “the Three Amigos.” Rev. William Lawson, the sole surviving member of the trio, sat in the front row near Fiorenza’s casket. Rabbi Samuel E. Karff, the third member, died in 2020. ( 📷 @jonjshapley / #HoustonChron )
