"A big influence on my sculptural work is the transcultural idea of visual irony, particularly within medieval Western and Eastern ceramics. The accidents of the kiln, the jeopardy, but also the idea of deliberately playing with the material to a point that I think is visually sophisticated beyond most anything else historically. People were making Iga ware pottery that looks exploded, ruinous, and deliberately so, but in the 1530s ā it's kind of incredible. This idea of being slightly out of place, out of time."
