Conservative MPs will today vote for the final time on Boris Johnson’s successor as they choose whether Liz Truss or Penny Mordaunt should face Rishi Sunak.
The former chancellor is all but certain to make it to the final stage of the election, when Conservative Party members will decide Britain’s next prime minister.
But the contest between Truss and Mordaunt is extremely tight. Truss, the foreign secretary, has been in third place behind Mordaunt, a trade minister, in the previous four rounds of voting. However, in yesterday’s ballot Truss narrowed the margin to six MPs and she is increasingly confident of overhauling Mordaunt this afternoon.
