Two headlines, one story in your Sunday paper — my profile of the governor of New York, Kathy Hochul. She took over in the wake of a misconduct scandal, had her own scandal last week, and is the first woman to hold the job in 244 years of male power — and is trying to keep it. Somewhat remarkably, or maybe not so remarkably at all, this woman’s entire career has been punctuated by men’s bad behavior: As a local politician in upstate New York, where she was promoted to county clerk by Eliot Spitzer (you know.. prostitution ring Spitzer). She then won a Congressional seat after a man resigned in a Craigslist nude selfie scandal; then later lost that seat to another man who would end up in jail; she took power eight months ago after Andrew Cuomo resigned in disgrace; now her lieutenant governor had been arrested in a fundraising scandal — two months before the primary election, and after she ran on a platform of cleaning UP the culture of state politics. There are plenty of important and ~serious~ things in this article, but honestly, here’s the one thing you need to know: When she took office, Kathy Hochul raised the official office thermostat in the state Capitol by MORE THAN 10 DEGREES. (Also: the women of the state govt assembly didn’t get a bathroom until 1984; and the first woman legislator in New York turned the spittoon on her desk — that’s a vessel for spitting out chewing tobacco — into a pot for a little fern.🪴) Link in bio, with huge thanks to my editors, copy editors and fact-checkers. 📷 by the great @caitoppermann
