š„Debunking: Sunscreen Misinformation
š©š»āāļøOāConnor et al just released paper detailing sunscreen misinformation and conspiracy theories on social media and sheās a doozy.
š Noted numerous misinformation āthemesā: (RanellaMD spoilers in ()
𤄠Sunscreen āalternativesā/ānaturalā options. (They will get you skin cancer, ānaturally.ā)
š¤„The ārealā people at risk for skin cancer (Do you have skin? Then tag, youāre it.)
š¤„Promoting ātanningā as safe (yes, safest way to be sure you look older as quickly as possible.)
š¤„Alternative (inaccurate) skin cancer causes (aināt the sunscreen, the seed oils, or your phones, just that big ball oā fire in the sky.)
šš»āāļøBut Dr. Ranella, why? Why do so many of these people put so much effort into misleading and frightening you with their āemotionally charged narratives from non-scientific sourcesā despite the OVERWHELMING science?
šThe overlap between folks scaring the bejesus out of you who JUST SO HAPPEN TO HAVE A FANTASTIC ALTERNATIVE TO SELL YOU is uncanny.
š©š»āāļøSo before you believe the next lie about sunscreen (and there will be another) š and ask yourself this.
š°Who gains? Who profits (all the #linktobuymybookinbio, #havewegotasaferatingsystemforyou?#haveyoutriedmynewsupplement?#haveyouseenmycookbook and so on.) But this time, keep your wits and realize you are being manipulated for profit. No shade, they do it again and again BECAUSE IT WORKS and because it gets them money and exposure.
!!ļøSo the next time someone tries to š± you into sunscreen fear, remind yourself the outcome: They get rich, you get skin cancer.
