2022 HIGHLIGHTS: If you know, you know–Governors Island is one of New York City’s most dynamic destinations for arts and culture. Come with us as we look back on just a few of the many, many highlights from 365 days of Governors Island Arts. ☑️ Public Art Commissions “The Open Orchard” by Sam Van Aken officially opened to the public in April. This public orchard slash public artwork acts as a living archive for antique and heirloom fruits once grown in NYC but have all but disappeared due to climate change and industrialized agriculture. “Moving Chains,” chapter two of Charles Gaines’s “The American Manifest,” opened on Governors Island in October. Evoking a ship’s hull, this 110- n foot-long kinetic sculpture examines the economic, judicial, and political frameworks that continue the legacy of slavery today. “The May Room” and “Church” by Shantell Martin, commissioned for the 2019 public season, closed in November after an amazing 3-year extension. More than 36,000 visitors experienced this stunning, immersive piece over the past 4 years. ☑️ Public Programs & Events We held two free outdoor film screenings on the Parade Ground over the summer in partnership with Film at Lincoln Center and Rooftop Films. The inaugural House Fest brought three days of free performances, workshops, activities, and events from citywide partners and the Organizations in Residence in Nolan Park and Colonels Row. ☑️ Organizations in Residence Two dozen arts, cultural, educational, and environmental NYC based nonprofits presented 200+ free exhibitions, events, and programs from May-November in and around the historic houses of Nolan Park and Colonels Row. THANK YOU to all of our amazing partners, collaborators, artists, organizations, donors, and visitors for an amazing year, and get excited for everything 2023 has in store for #GovIslandArts! 📸 & 🎥 by Timothy Schenck, Julienne Schaer, Alison Luntz Photography & Philip Greenberg
