We San Diegans can get a little too buddy-buddy with Mother Nature. She spoils us. We sunbathe on Christmas Day. We surf in February. We welcome fleeting, gentle rain storms like old friends. We live in sunny-and-75 oblivion while the rest of the globe faces her wrath: tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms. This weekend, though? She put us in our place.
On Friday, after several days of storms, The National Weather Service issued a high surf warning for the coastal areas of San Diego County. Waves were expected to reach 10 to 16 feet; we’ve heard they hit 20. Tides were so high that beaches disappeared. The Ocean Beach pier closed to foot traffic as water pummeled its already spindly legs. Lifeguards rescued at least two experienced surfers in La Jolla. Meanwhile, other surfers were riding waves in the river entrance channel by Dog Beach. In Imperial Beach, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach, water gushed over walls, lapped at the edges of homes, surged onto patios. Sidewalks became streams. Seaweed was strewn across the street.
Here’s a compilation of footage of the unprecedented swells. Shot by @connordever, @colepark.er, @whatcameradoyouhave, @way_up_drones, @sandiegosurfphotos, and @mancandybeefjerky. Cover photo: @lens_salt
