Feline leukemia (FeLV+) may sound scary, but it is simply a manageable virus that affects a cat’s immune system, not a type of cancer.. Cats diagnosed as FeLV+ are often at risk for euthanasia in shelters, so we created a program to keep this population of cats safe! We started our FeLV+ program and adoption center in 2016 not only to protect these amazing lives but also in hopes of fighting the stigmas behind the virus. These kitties that are traditionally seen as “unadoptable” have great success in finding loving homes - in 2021 we were able to place 584 FeLV+ cats into adoptive homes! We’re aiming to surpass last year’s adoption numbers in 2022! Boo Thang is one of the kitties we placed in a home this year -- that home was a little further than our usual adoption story! Boo Thang’s new mom is a veterinary nurse in Massachusetts. She wanted Boo Thang so badly, that we were able to sneak him into one of our transport flights from Austin to MA! He sat shotgun next to the pilot, on a transport flight filled with dogs. Boo Thang even wore a tiny aviator costume (briefly). You can visit our FeLV+ Adoption Center and take home a cat like Boo Thang! It’s located at our Town Lake location (Cesar Chavez) and open daily from 12-6pm. Do you have a FeLV+ cat? Tell us about them in the comments!
