Donald Trump refused to call off a mob of his supporters and watched on television as they invaded the US Capitol last year despite the pleas of his advisers and members of his own family, the committee investigating the riot was told last night. Trump eventually agreed to record a video message telling his supporters to “go home, we love you” but only after the White House had learnt that National Guard troops and other reinforcements were being mobilised. In another video message recorded the following day, outtakes presented by the committee showed that the president still refused to say “the election’s over”.
