Being my second piece as a Staff Writer, I found it pertinent to try to reach out to less mainstream events on campus. That lead me to learning about the A Litany for Survival: Public Reading Series, hosted by Drs. Donna Weir-Soley and Shawn Christian. My familiarity with Dr. Christian and his efforts to extend the literature of marginalized voices made it easier for me to connect with the event’s purpose, and therefore gain a good grasp to report on. Writing this article taught me the importance of having one-on-one conversations away from a group setting. In group setting, communities like these flourish and are able to reflect and connect on shared ideas while encourage a passionate union between readers. But in a private conversation, the details are a lot more personal and indicative of the person’s ambitions within the culture of the reading series. It allows sources to speak more about their own emotions and their own nuanced opinions.
