The Mother as a Creator
Taiwanese artist Annie Wang’s thoughtful project feels like a brilliant combination , self portrait , the family Album, & the blurring of lines of what we could perceive as performance & reality. Through Wang we witness the passing years of herself, the mother, and her son, the previous image referenced and reproduced in chronological order.
I love the playful and at times surreal tone that can appear. The images can conjure up readings of the different roles of Motherhood. These notions of provider, protector, friend etc ,I particularly like image of Wang & her son where they appear to be flying, produces memories of playfulness, with my own mother. Yet it must be acknowledged my readings also tinged with bias, my relationship is a close one with my mother, what would my readings be if it was a relationship that was fractured I ask myself. The idea of growing older, children I have found can be like demarcations of your own mortality, I have noticed that recently watching my friends children grow. Damn a bit early for existential thoughts 😊.
Wangs work conjures up the questions of the relationship of motherhood and artist. The real issue of women’s ability to be practicing artist while being mothers, physically & economically. The complications for Women as working mothers, & labor is by no means exclusive to the arts , but here Wang literally navigates the subject. Also the work encompasses many other qualities to it to be enjoyed. I am careful to not play into reductionism here, something that we are all probably susceptible of.
Here are a selection of images on the post, a time jump in a few, it’s worth an exploration. Enjoy 😊
