In the spring of 2020, just before I signed with @4ad, they asked me to make a cover of a treasured song from their archive. I chose This Mortal Coil’s “Another Day”. It was at the start of lockdown, I recorded the song at home, multi-layering my cello until it sounded like an orchestra, singing the vocals quietly so I wouldn’t disturb my flatmate on their zoom call. My grandad had just died and I felt very isolated from my loved ones, I left the house once a day to ride my bike but my feet never touched the ground. Digging into the history of this song, I learned it was originally written and performed by Roy Harper and was later covered by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel for a TV special before it made its way to Ivo & TMC. When I was recording the last pieces of “Antidotes” at the 4AD studio, the This Mortal Coil poster would look over me whilst I ate my lunch in the office upstairs. Visiting the archive I found the original master on tape and held it in my hands. These past few years have felt so fluid, it’s been joyous and tragic and strange and magical all at the same time.
