Photos by @nicholesobecki Kenya Wildlife Service veterinarian Wanjala Wavumbah examines Dezmond, an adult male that recently migrated into one of the study’s baboon groups. Researchers estimate that Dezmond is about 121⁄2 years old and his group’s fourth-ranked male. Next, they look at the teeth of the baboon Lyken. As these animals age, their molars’ enamel wears away, which can provide researchers with age estimates. After samples and measurements are taken, the baboons—in this case, Dezmond—are safely released back into the wild. For 50 years, the Amboseli Baboon Research Project in Kenya has studied more than 1,500 baboons across eight generations. What it’s learned could apply to our lives too.
