I have fought to stop gun violence throughout my career. First, as a courtroom prosecutor, and then as district attorney of San Francisco when I created a gun specialist unit to go after violent offenders. Then, as attorney general, our office worked closely with the California Bureau of Firearms to investigate and seize firearms from those who unlawfully possess them. As a U.S. senator, I supported legislation to protect our communities. While there’s still more work to do, I know the Bipartisan Safer Community Act—the first meaningful federal gun safety legislation in three decades— will save lives.
