Flint Town in 3 acts.
LaToya Ruby Frazier.
The work of Frazier is captivating & one I have great respect for. I admit there could be some bias that influences me due to my own background.
Frazier’s work is a continued investigation, re presentation of the contemporary experiences of the American working class, In a Post Industrial world. I see her work in some ways a legacy of Allan Sekula’s & Martha Rosler, Carrie Mae Weems, also some parallels with Stephen Shores ‘Steel Town’.
The work is layered , each project tries to re present the catastrophic and systematic affects the demise of industrialism & labor’s affects the communities. The Physical & Psychological reverberations that the loss of infrastructure has on your everyday experience. The Flint story is exactly that, the lives of 3 generations of women living with the consequences of the Flint water catastrophe. How the convergence of different agencies lead to the pollution of the local towns river, unfit for human consumption. We are presented with the story of Shea Cobb & her daughters story of how when your basic utilities are compromised, what that can really mean. The work is also what could be suggested as the shattering of the illusion of American Dream,Flint is a city in Michigan, it was home to General Motors, like so many industrial cities former shadows of themselves. It is interesting fact that President Obama visits & drank water at the opening of the newly opened Flint Water plant in 2016. Unlike some Projects that centres on poverty, Frasier does not just depict the catastrophe, it also at times shows those chinks of joy, love & hope. Those actions are ones that communities have in their struggles,at times often not suggested or depicted. Frazier’s Flint Town is a point of view, as a Photographer, her own background and the people who are on the other side of the lens. It could be suggested her own experiences growing up in communities affected by Post industrialism has lead to these investigations.
There are others & this is one of them. Anna Clark’s book ‘The Poisoned City’ a writer for the Detroit free press also tells the story of how this all happened.
