Actual footage of #Artemis mission preparation! 🌙
In the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) in Houston, engineers are matching conditions underwater that astronauts might experience on the Moon.
This includes performing basic movements: pushing around a tool cart that contains lunar sampling tools and markers, and simple tasks like picking up rocks, trenching, walking on inclines and declines, kneeling and standing back up, and even fall recovery.
The lunar area is still in development. Soon, additional rocks will be put into the pool in addition to large textured panels that can be configured to simulate slopes for walking and areas to take core samples. In addition, there will also be a large non-reflective black curtain to prevent light reflection to better simulate lunar south pole conditions.
Video description: Divers at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory can be seen training underwater in low-light conditions. They are swimming beside mock-lunar sample rocks while using flashlights and tools to perform necessary tasks in a 1/6 gravity environment.
