BREAKING: A Dominican woman has been sentenced to 15 years in jail after trafficking 2 teens for sex and holding them captive in her home. Isha* and Lucy* were 16 and 17 years old when they were rescued at the end of 2020 in an IJM-assisted operation. The rescue revealed that the woman held the teens captive in her home. “This is the THIRD ever trafficking sentence in Santiago and the fact that the court is issuing a strong sentence represents a great achievement for our work, but most importantly, for the community, especially the children who can see they will be protected,” said Sonia Hernandez, IJM Dominican Republic’s Associate Director of Public Justice System Strengthening. IJM has been working in the Dominican Republic since 2013 to combat sex trafficking. Click the link in our bio to learn more about our work.
