In order of priorities IMO:
ENVIRONMENT: You’re about to be doing many things 1 handed and with probably a lot less time then you think. The baby will dictate that last one. Nutrition is key! Out with the bad (aka not preferred or nutrient dense), in with the good (nutrient dense). BUT it doesn’t have to end there, think through where you’ll want to spend your time and what you need from that area – snacks, side table, a water bottle thats easy to carry while carrying a baby, easy hair styles you like, how to do your skin care routine 1 handed, making/washing bottle/pump parts easily, etc. Of course, you may be able to hand the baby to someone else (hopefully) or put them down for literally a minute but probably not every time. It’s worth thinking of the important things TO YOU and how you may make them easier before baby is here.
Freezer meals and snacks: Making a few freezer meals and 1 handed snacks will come as a huge help after the baby is here. Stocking up on broth, teas, or other nutrition items makes it easy to make supportive decisions.
Support team: who, what, when and for how long. Who will be helping you out in the beginning or can help when things get tough and is there to receive your call. What can they do – make a meal, do the dishes, fold the laundry, pick up groceries? Give those that ask, “just let me know how I can help”, an answer. When will they be able to help – a meal train can be a great tool for this when it comes to friends and family providing meals for you and your family. For how long – if parents are coming to help, it’s beneficial to know for how long.
CHECK in with your partner: be sure to review if all assumptions are clear between the two of you. Having this conversation when you’re exhausted is not the best time.
Plan bi-weekly 30 minute check-ins with your partner after your baby comes. Talk over what’s working, what’s not (for both of you), and a new plan. This check-in can continue after the first few months but could be done with less frequency.
