Today we shine a light on Winifred Hervey, whose storied career as a television screenwriter & producer paved the way for many Black people in the entertainment industry. After having the entire room in stitches while interviewing for an internship at the Garry Marshall company, she knew comedy writing was her calling. She worked on TV classics like Mork & Mindy, Benson, and Golden Girls, winning an Emmy for Best Comedy in 1987 as one of the producers. She went on to write for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, created The Steve Harvey Show, and produced episodes of Half & Half on UPN. She is the first and only Black woman to win a Best Comedy Emmy.
