Yesterday I had the absolute honour of attending Buckingham Palace to recognise those who work in the film and television industry. I still can’t quite believe I got to have a chat with His Majesty The King and tell him about work we have been doing in the documentary space. It was so amazing to see so many people who work behind the scenes recognised for their incredible work, I had major imposter syndrome being stood in a room with so many awesome people.
This year has been full of a lot of things for me, and I’ve learnt a lot about myself too, both as a person and as a filmmaker. Being recognised for my documentaries is such a huge, huge moment. I get so embedded in the stories in working on, and being present in the moment with incredibly brave women, that I sometimes forget to take a step back and remember how many lives we have changed (and will change) through powerful documentaries. I had a wonderful lady come up to me yesterday at the Palace to talk about how she uses my documentaries in her lessons... those comments mean everything to me and they make me emotional every time I hear them🥹
I realise we still have a lot of work to do. Women are still feeling silenced everywhere we turn. I work in such a female (& survivor) focussed environment where victims are safe and secure with us. Even though I listen to the hardest stories, I look at the world with rose tinted glasses sometimes, expecting everyone to listen and empathise with women & survivors the way myself and those around me do.
I hope that we can all learn to listen a lot better. Believe a lot more. Empower, inspire, and never be afraid to speak up.
I hope that my documentaries have been of some help to anyone who has watched them. ❤️
