It's Black August, and bookseller Ariana has some great recommendations (and a bit of a history lesson for you). She wanted to feature a few books to commemorate Black August, a small way to honor the courage, legacy and sacrifice of Black revolutionaries and those who fight for Black liberation. Visit the link in our bio to see what books she chose.
Want to know more? Black August was started in the ‘70s in a California prison after the deaths of George and Jonathan Jackson as well as other Black Californians imprisoned by the carceral state. August is also a time when many notable moments of Black resistance occurred: the Nat Turner Rebellion, the March on Washington and Attica uprisings. It’s a memorable and special month.
According to the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, the purpose of Black August is to honor those who have died, to unify Black prisoners, and “To educate our people about and honor the history and actions of continued resistance of Black/New Afrikan/Afrikan peoples to oppression, colonization and slavery in the U.S. and throughout the Diaspora, with particular emphasis on prisoners, political prisoners, freedom fighters and their historical acts of resistance.”
