Photos by @kiliiiyuyan Utqiagvik’s cemetery is the northernmost one in the United States—at the tip of Alaska—and is covered in the deep snow of winter. Fanny Akpik, who recently passed away, was one of the most important elders in the Iñupiaq community here. Standing for a portrait in front of her ancestors, she told me she was responsible for the Iñupiatun language curriculum for the school district, so that generations to come would know their native language.
