A different kind of painting exercise: do everything opposite of what you normally do! I learned this tip from one of my favorite art professors. She noticed I liked to draw small and detailed so she handed me a huge piece of paper and charcoal. Two things which frightened me! 😳 But after I drew my huge charcoal drawing I learned the benefit of trying new things. It taught me to be outside my comfort zone, to embrace the messy ways of charcoal (I’m a clean and organized artist lol), and it helped me loosen up the way I was thinking about painting. So yesterday at my friends house, I tried watercolor colored pencils by Prismacolor that she had. I tried many, bright colors and I went with a loose mark making with my composition. I absolutely loved the final little paintings I created (I didn’t go large because I didn’t have any big pieces of paper with me). Overall, I highly suggest trying this method of going as opposite as you can of what you normally do with your art!
