We have several culinary kryptonites. Foods that makes us go against our better judgment, betray societal norms, abandon acceptable meal times. For example: chips and salsa. Doesn’t matter if it’s six a.m. We’ll eat it. We’ll enjoy it. We’ll consume the equivalent of a dozen large tortillas. This month, we found a new kryptonite: señorita bread. One of our editor’s picks from the January issue. (Full list of the best things we ate this month at the link in our bio.) You know when you bite into something and think, this contains an obscene amount of butter, and I’m not mad about it? Señorita bread is exactly that. Bay Area cult-favorite Filipino bakery Starbread made its way to Chula Vista in 2022. Its case houses baked goods galore, but the signature item is Señorita bread. Individual, palm-sized bread pockets, with a texture somewhere between classic pandesal and pop-from-the-tube crescent rolls. Inside: a sweet filling, made up of breadcrumbs, butter, and brown sugar. You will inhale a full dozen, involuntarily. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. @starbread_bakery
