A 24-year-old professional collegiate football player (running back) presented to the emergency room due to an injury that occurred earlier that day. At football practice, when cutting on artificial turf, he felt a “pop” while planting his right foot. He was unable to return to the field due to pain in his forefoot and decreased active range of motion in his toe. On physical examination, joint swelling and tenderness were palpable in his first metatarsal phalangeal joint. There was full passive range of motion at the first metatarsal phalangeal joint. Antalgic gait was present.
