#ELBARRIO This Saturday at 1pm, East Harlem community members and organizations will come together to celebrate the life and legacy of artist, activist, and former director of El Museo, Hiram Maristany with a special street naming ceremony. Born and raised in El Barrio (East Harlem) on 111th Street and Madison Avenue, the street will be renamed in his honor.
Hiram Maristany was a photographer born and raised in El Barrio (East Harlem) on 111th Street. Encouraged by social worker Dan Murrow, Maristany first picked up the camera in 1959 while still a teenager, and dedicated the next six decades documenting the life, history, culture, and beauty of his neighborhood. Active in the cultural and political movements of the New York Puerto Rican community, Maristany became a founding member of the Young Lords Party in 1969, working as the group’s official photographer and capturing some of its most iconic actions. Maristany was also involved in the early history of El Museo del Barrio, where he served as director from 1974 to 1977. While renowned for his images of the people and places of El Barrio, Maristany’s photography extended beyond East Harlem, including Puerto Rico, and in particular, Loiza. His artworks have been featured in numerous exhibitions over the years, including ¡Presente! The Young Lords in New York (El Museo del Barrio, 2015), Down These Mean Streets (Smithsonian American Art Museum @americanart, 2017 and El Museo del Barrio, 2018-2019), and the recent Greater New York (MoMA PS1 @momaps1, 2021). Maristany’s photographs are part of the permanent collections of such prestigious institutions as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The National Museum of African American History and Culture @nmaahc, and El Museo del Barrio, among others.
INFO: Saturday, October 15th, 1PM. E.111th St. and Madison Ave. Free and Open to the public.
