Here’s to a cold one 🍻! Back in 1850, people preserved their food using natural cooling methods. The couple who built this house planned for a really convenient way of getting a cold - home brewed drink when the spring sun started warming up the cottage. It used to be a hatch in the floor - right in this corner, leading to a small cold food cellar. Like a submerged version of the new refrigerator standing there today. Filled with winter ice and isolated with sawdust and straw it was wireless, energy independent and it never broke. Ever. (At least until the floor caved in, some 50 years later). Seems a lot more sustainable and in some ways more future proof than this “modern” version? Anyway - cheers!
