HE WHO FEEDS WOLVES WITH HIS HANDS by @gioblackpeter11 Commissioned as an ode to Saint Sebastian who is often referred to as the “patron” saint to LGBTQ communities and probably one of the earliest known gay icons. Nothing points to his own queer history but depictions of Saint Sebastian typically show him as a young handsome man that quickly became a muse to many queer storytellers. Susan Sontag, a novelist, pointed out that his face doesn’t register physical pain, that his beauty and his suffering are eternally divorced from one another... a moving reference to all suffering gays right? According to Christian lore Saint Sebastian miraculously survived the assassination by arrows which also poetically ties in well to themes of overcoming LGBTQ adversity. I have always been moved by visuals and stories of Saint Sebastian and after seeing a few interpretations through the years I thought it would be fun to develop a modern day version. I am a huge fan of Gio Black Peter and his raw and often very queer depictions in art as well as his use of color and symbolism. Couldn’t be happier with this piece and the process of developing it with Gio. Eternally grateful and honored to have his work in my home. #queerart #gayart #saintsebastian
