San Diego’s barbecue world adds a few more sticks to the pit on Jan. 15. Heritage BBQ & Beer Co (@heritagebarbecue) is opening a 10,000 square foot slow-smoked haven in Oceanside. This is good, real good. And it’s got some humble roots. Husband-and-wife duo Danny and Brenda Castillo started this in their backyard in San Juan Capistrano—a mom and pop pitmaster pop-up. People went bonkers. Texas Monthly, which takes their barbecue very, very seriously—there are reports that Texas children are baptized in a mixture of ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire—raved about them. The fact that they made it this far is a bit of a miracle. Texas barbecue has been hard to replicate in California because the smokers they use in, say, Austin or Lockhart, were kind of illegal out west. Barbecue people still broke the heck out of that law, but not in a restaurant. In fact, first time Heritage tried to do it they got shut down. But, through perseverance and red tape, Heritage became the first California restaurant to legally have an offset smoker. SDM’s filmmaker @jeremy_sazon took a look around before opening weekend. Jan. 15. Many square feet of slow-cooked, smoke ringed, greasy fingered happiness. We’re quite frankly getting a little annoyed at all the good stuff Oceanside is getting.
