It has been over two months since I left my residency at @wavehill and I literally haven’t made much which sucks because 9-5’s are not it. Nonetheless as I sit my little nook piecing some of the broken pieces that broke when moving out, I can’t help but to be re-inspired and “get my ass up and work” on my creative practice.
For now I leave you with a video— picking up the pieces. The “work” and with hopes of whats coming. Always mapping always placing always oriented one way or another always here and there and always looking.
This work is an iteration of what has constantly been present in my practice as an act of mapping and an act of attempting to place. Referencing architectural elements and symbols of places of where I lived I attempt to embody a place and use my body as a map as a cartography of a place to further understand the ways places shape us and make us and simultaneously what allows us to make sense of a place and find better orientation. Noticing common architectural features, plants, creatures. In the light and elements I become oriented.
While allowing myself and the viewer to peek through the holes, the bushes, the fences and shimmers of light, in such neighborhoods we have opportunities in finding one another. Whose watching and where is my body oriented? What becomes visible to who and for what? Can you see the light inside of yourself and the one in me? In using ceramics I create layers— topographic layer of skin/flesh become dirt/earth and challenge what photographs do and are capable of doing. When does the body dissolve ? When does it stand firmly and present ? When does it radiate and palpitate and grow ? Such tensions become evident and sometimes reveal themselves through acts of looking and sitting. 🌿💦👀✨
