Last night @the.dresden w/ @jkleckie @jacktonejazz 🌟🥂🎶 I absolutely love form solos. When I first started going out to sessions in my early 20s I was so scared the band would leave me alone on stage to solo over the form and that I would get lost and wind up wandering in no man’s land in my head - but then I figured out that if I learned the melodies and words to the standards I could sing along in my mind and wouldn’t get lost. I carried around a notepad of lyrics and would write down any new songs that I didn’t know that I noticed would get called a lot at the sessions. It gave me a whole new feeling of confidence and love of the songbook. I also started getting into singers and finding the versions of the tunes I liked best based on the vocalist. To this day I often prefer to solo over the form rather than a vamp if it’s a great American songbook tune.
