Each salt mining grid is owned by a local family and passed down within families. Built AD 200-900 they predate the Incas. There are about 3000 mines and the salt is pink. Unlike Machu Picchu, there were very few tourists. This guy was working and didn’t let me get closer to the mines but when he left a very entrepreneurial girl of about ten sneaked me across the gate in exchange for all my soles. A fair deal.
