The legendary fisherman, Captain Ahab :: A brown bear hunts salmon in the shallows of Hallo bay - sadly with minimal luck due, in no small part, to an alarmingly low volume of fish for this time of year. :: When we released this image as part of the @clarendonfineartofficial show ‘Harry Skeggs: Beyond’ many people asked me whether this photo was safe. :: The truth is bears in parts of Katmai, including Hallo bay have been exposed to systemic multi generational habituation. This does not make them tame however and the term habituation is very misunderstood. What habituated correctly means is ‘a reduction in intensity or duration in response to a stimulus’ - in layman’s that the bears have had positive experiences with humans over generations and are not inherently scared of us by merely our presence. Interactions can be, when properly orchestrated by a professional guide with a life time of experience, entirely safe for both bear and photographer. However these are wild animals and where the situation is handled badly, or the animal spooked, they are capable of extreme harm. :: For those reasons it is unbelievably important to work with the best in guides and it was my true privilege to work with the greatest amongst these, the bear god himself, @drewhh - his assessment of the bears’ movements and the interaction with the tide, social dynamics and weather was incredible to listen to.
