We can't help but share this sweet rehabilitation throwback story! The star of today's #TBT is Sara, an infant chimp who underwent rehabilitation at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Lake Victoria, Uganda.
Sara was confiscated from a trader in South Sudan, and at the time of her arrival, she was in bad condition. Her eyes were puffy due to dehydration, and she had a big hard stomach with bald patches. In this series of pictures, Sara's caregivers look over her after a recent surgery. While on the Island, she developed a case of mouth pox, which Ngamba's veterinarian, Dr. Joshua Rukundo, treated. The caregivers at Ngamba Island nursed Sara back to optimal health, allowing her to live in harmony with the other rescued chimps.
Stories like these show us the life-changing impact that caregivers can have on animals in need. As a result of these interactions, Sara has opened her arms to safety, companionship, and even a hug, making Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary feel more like home. 💚
