Boo-Hooray presents our 37th shortlist, gathering rare flyers, programs, and costumes from the career of Joey Arias, including the Thierry Mugler costume worn by Arias on Saturday Night Live. Joey Arias is a performance artist, cabaret singer, and drag artist, whose singular career spans from the 1970s to present day. From his 1979 appearance with Klaus Nomi as David Bowie’s backup performer on Saturday Night Live to his 2011 surrealist puppet show with puppeteer Basil Twist titled “Arias with a Twist”, Arias’ life and work is not easily encapsulated into a linear narrative or singular descriptor. Presented here are original costumes, vintage clothing, nightlife handbills and posters, rare books, and more documenting Arias' myriad creative endeavors and appearances. Boo-Hooray proudly placed the Joey Arias Archive at Harvard University's Houghton Library in 2019, and also placed stage costume and textile pieces with the RISD Museum in 2019. These collections highlight and document the history of New York nightlife, performance art, fashion, and music through the eyes of one of the most influential and game-changing entertainers of the last half of the twentieth century.
