Herbs have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. If I had a stomach ache, I was given licorice root; if I had the flu, lots of fresh garlic and elderberry syrup; sore muscles, echinacea; anxiety, chamomile. There was a recipe for every ailment. It either came straight from my family’s garden or through some homeopathic lozenge.
Since spring had sprung, and I recently finished up my herbalism course this year, I started noticing all these wild plants that have come in to bloom. Even living in this giant concrete jungle of a city (NY), the Mother Earth provides us with all these gifts, you just have to look around.
On my walk home from yoga in Brooklyn the other day, I noticed all these beautiful (and medicinal) plants just growing wild everywhere. I mean, wild carrot, echinacea, dandelion, asparagus!!! Mind blown. So I came back the next day and foraged a few for my dining table.
Here is a little step by step on how I made a beautiful wildflower display using Yarrow, Echinacea, Queens Lace (or Wild Carrot), Dandelion, and Virginia Pepperweed.
* If foraging for medicinal purposes, I would NOT recommend using herbs found near the road as well as from the city - they absorb carbon and dog piss and that’s not too healthy for ya..
* also, when foraging make sure to educate yourself on how to properly trim the plant so you don’t kill it and make sure it is not on the endangered list. That’s all :)
