Today is World Migratory Bird Day! Throughout the year, birds bring color, playfulness, and joy to White Sands National Park. While the park contains many year-round residents, 200 migratory birds will use White Sands as a temporary home throughout the year. White Sands is along the central flyway, a north-to-south route that many birds use to travel up to 5,000 miles to get to their winter or nesting spots. During the summer months, water will fill up our temporary lake, Lake Lucero, as well as several playas, and interdunal areas. Water will invite dozens of wetland bird species to the park. What is the longest journey you’ve taken? Image Description: Avocets looking for food in a flooded interdunal area.
