We. The Culture: Works By The Eighteen Art Collective at the Indianapolis Museum of Art • A few weeks ago, I had the great privilege of attending the private V.I.P opening of the We. The Culture: Works By The Eighteen Art Collective exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art also known as the Newfields. For those that don’t know the Newfields was founded in 1883 and is a 139-year-old institution. On September 22, 2022 history was made as the Newfields opened its first ever exhibition featuring 18 Black artists and their incredible work to the world. Considering that of all the works in the collections of all major US museums, just 1.2% (yes I can cite my sources) were made by Black artists - the lowest share of any race - it is fair to say that there is no precedent for a moment like this, an exhibition like this. A new chapter began in the history books this day and I was honored to witness and celebrate the vibrant, joyful, and inclusive future that this exhibition signifies. We. The Culture: Works by The Eighteen Art Collective is guest curated by GANGGANG and The Eighteen Art Collective. The Eighteen Art Collective is a group of 18 local Black artists who realized the “Black Lives Matter” street mural on Indiana Avenue in August 2020. They are united by their mission to collaborate on the betterment of Black creatives and the community that they serve. To anyone who finds themselves in Indianapolis over the course of this year long exhibition, I sincerely hope you find the time to make it to the Newfields and experience this historic exhibition for yourself. While you are there, I ask you to take a moment to identify your role in the fight towards equity in the arts and channel the emotional experience into behavioral change.
