States of Becoming will open at The Africa Center in New York City on October 14! Curated by Fitsum Shebeshe (Curatorial Intensive alum, 2014), our newest traveling exhibition grew out of the curator’s lived experience following his 2016 move from Ethiopia to Baltimore. Confronted with a different society and the weight of cultural assimilation, Shebeshe encountered a wide range of existential questions that shaped his relationship to institutions and culture.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this exhibition, Shebeshe unites 17 artists from the African Diaspora who have either come to the United States over the past thirty years or are first-generation born, from 12 countries in Africa and one in the Caribbean. Each has had a unique relationship to the U.S., which is reflected in their work through a sense of hybrid culture emerging out of real and imagined genealogies of cultural, racial, national, and geographic belonging. Like so many of our exhibitions, States of Becoming represents the deeply meaningful global connections that ICI shares, and we're so thrilled to open a new exhibition here in New York, curated by an alum of our Curatorial Intensive and hosted by alum Evelyn Owen (CI Marrakech 2015) at The Africa Center. Much, much more to come!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
