Last weekend, I had the honor of giving a keynote to the incoming class at the University of Chicago @harrispolicy ❤️ Here’s a quick snippet of what I shared with them that I hope resonates with some of you: “Many elite universities only exist to reproduce thought and invest in world leaders who will add to *their* legacy. You are UChicago’s greatest thing so it’s your job to take the access and use it in service of real people and a real sense urgency... The people directly impacted by the issues you’ll be working on shouldn’t just be recipients of your help. They are just as much experts as you — if not moreso — and should be partners in this work. Know their power and decide how your work will contribute to the chorus of voices and actions... There is a need for everything: Cultural work. Community organizing. Policy drafting. Fundraising. Comms. Tech. Statistical and analytical assessments. It is all critical but if it’s not accessible to those who need it most OR if it’s used to defy their lived experiences, what are we here for?”
