🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️Back in 2016 I’d chill with @kityanpoet and @melsaboo in their kitchens as they sang songs in progress from @interstatemusical and cooked me food like queer chosen family often does while I was going thru a mental health breakdown and now it’s 2022, I am infinitely proud to see these two incredible friends bring their masterfully written musical to @eastwestplayers in Los Ángeles. What they created is beyond a musical; it is a living experience—a portal to a future where anyone who has felt like an outsider to their families or to this White supremacist heteronormative binary world. I never thought I’d live in a world where we as Asians in diaspora can go to the theater and experience first hand the journey of travelling across the country, or unleashing our secrets to the depths of the Internet blogs (because we had no one else), to one day find our queer and trans chosen family. The characters in Interstate help me embody a braver version of myself, where I finally see the possibility of finally bringing my authentic self out of hiding, perhaps maybe even for the first time. I brought 30 folks in my community to share with them this nuanced story about diasporic queer and trans Asian friendship that my two friends spent a decade writing. The same love that Kit & Melissa shared with me when I was lost in my mid twenties, the songs they sang to me in bedrooms 7 years ago that made me weep as I came into my own non-binaryness and helped me break out from a lifetime of performing a fractured version of my self—they bring that same love and songs to the stage for all of us, and I know there will be more stages. What a tremendous gift.
