Sometimes it’s hard to know who and what inspires you until you try to unpick what your subconscious is doing. At the end of last year I went to Jackson Hole and out there I rediscovered Ansell Adams and his iconic work. In particular this part of the world is home to his iconic photo, Snake River. Landscape has never really been my focus but I was captivated by this photo but had zero interest in recreating it.
::
Since that point I have found myself drawn to S shaped bodies of water and it dawned on me in Katmai that this was his influence. It is so important that photographers don’t look to parrot, instead reinterpret inspiration in their own voice. Whilst some of the pieces of this photo are found in Ansell’s work - the brooding mountains, ominous skies and snaking river it is undeniably my style, with a wildlife focus and lower angle.
::
I cannot claim to be on the level of Ansell but I enjoyed the challenge of looking at a work through my own eyes.
