🌸during a time of much disassociation and rage, I wanted to announce that for the last two months I have been in the inaugural cohort of the Bahdung Residency alongside my long time friend & comrade @tlynnfaz who i am dreaming up a public art collaboration with. Participating in these weekly dialogues reminds me that feelings of powerlessness are an illusion the state brainwashes us to believe so it can remain in domination. the state & white supremacy is most threatened when our friendships empower us to mobilize across communities & shift culture in daring ways🔥
Gratitude for @aaartsalliance and @mocada_museum for offering us an opportunity to learn & foster friendship and allyship between AAPI and Black communities. This years residents also include @diaryofafirebird @hannahmiao @chanelmatsunami alisha.acquaye Daphne Lundi & Gloria Lau, @hidemi_takagi & @mctingbudong with sessions lead by @ykreborn and @decolonizethisplace đź–¤
“Inspired by recent events that have deeply impacted these communities, as well as the Stop Asian Hate and Black Lives Matter movements, this program takes cue from the first large-scale Asian–African or Afro–Asian Conference, also known as the Bandung Conference, which took place in 1955 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The summit, which hosted leaders from 29 newly independent Asian and African states emerging from colonial rule (representing a total population of 1.5 billion people, 54% of the world’s population at the time), signaled a pivotal juncture between these communities to discuss peace, and mutual respect for sovereignty, political self-determination, cultural cooperation, human rights, the role of the Global South (then known as the Third World), economic development, and decolonization.
Similarly, The Bandung 2022 Residency aims to cultivate a dynamic safe space for a diverse cohort of changemakers interested in engaging in social justice discourse, restorative healing, cultural placemaking, expanding the narrative between communities, and cross-community allyship, whether participating in the program for their personal transformation, in service to the communities identified, or both.”
