💙 We had an incredible time visiting #toshikotakaezu’s studio in New Jersey. Seeing the works in her home, her kiln and work space, her artwork from friends and contemporaries. Thank you @toshikotakaezufoundation for inviting us and @d.midori for making this happen! Thank you Don Fletcher for all your stories about Toshiko and how she practiced and made work! I especially loved hearing that when she glazed a large work, she didn’t necessarily use a banding wheel to spin it. Instead, she did “choreography around a piece” with her brush. I love to picture her dancing with her giant works. As an artist working in clay, it’s invigorating to see the ways a woman, especially an AAPI woman who practiced 50 years ago created a vast career and legacy in a field dominated by white men. As a someone who loves color, round forms, and glazes, I feel mentored by the works and her life. ❤️ Thank you @gokasai @fdk_florals @minhsinger for this adventure! I can’t wait to come back and have more with you all again! 😻
