The Story Behind MF DOOM’s Mask The iconic mask worn by the enigmatic MF DOOM would become synonymous with the rapper’s legacy, helping to further his supervillain facade whilst retaining a sense of anonymity for the man behind the metal face. Daniel Dumile, or DOOM as he is more commonly known, displayed an immense musical ability from a young age, performing under his first pseudonym Zev Love X with the group KMD at just 16. Following the death of his fellow KMD member and younger brother DJ Subroc, Dumile would take a 5 year hiatus from hip-hop, after becoming frustrated and disillusioned with the industry. In 1999, Dumile would reemerge through his alter ego MF DOOM, releasing his debut album Operation: Doomsday. This newfound identity would blend elements of the Phantom of the Opera and Doctor Doom, with Dumile never again appearing publicly without his metal mask from this point onward. DOOM would describe the mask as a rebellion against the corporate nature of the music industry, allowing the audience to focus upon the artistry rather than the image. This decision to conceal his identity would perfectly blend with the supervillain moniker, as the character was not interested in fame or fortune. The first prototype mask was customised by Blake Lethem, aka graffiti artist KEO, made from a halloween Darth Maul mask. It wouldn't be until the release of his magnum opus Madvillainy alongside producer Madlib, that DOOM’s now infamous mask would be revealed. Originally a prop from Gladiator (2000), DOOM would take the metal face and continue to wear the mask for the rest of his career. Whilst the late Daniel Dumile would perform under a variety of pseudonyms and personas throughout his illustrious career, DOOM’s mask while always remain synonymous with his legacy.
